Many people feel apprehensive about travelling to Russia or the former Eastern European bloc countries. The language barrier, politics and the vast distances within these countries (about which most travel agents know extremely little) are not encouraging factors.

After the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, I was responsible for opening up tourism in Russia (and the Czech Republic) for the international travel company Abercrombie and Kent who had no presence in these countries before that.
